RIO DE JANEIRO -- The World Rowing Federation (FISA) is adamant every race will take place in the Olympic regatta at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas despite Sundays programme being postponed due to windy conditions and a fault with the buoy system.Sir Steve Redgrave, Britains most decorated rower, backed the decision to postpone Sundays rowing but warned of a doomsday outcome where, if this wind continues and scheduling chaos ensues, then for the first time since the inaugural modern Olympics medals may not be awarded. The weather caused havoc on Saturday. After Serbias mens pair capsized in conditions Katherine Grainger called the worst shes ever rowed in, Sunday mornings training sessions saw two further boats flip. With gusts blowing down from the hills, the original 8.30 a.m. start time for Sundays rowing was firstly delayed by two hours but then came confirmation at 10.15 a.m. of postponement after the wind direction shifted, seeing 50 metres/second gusts causing boats unable to hold their direction and buoys shifted out of position in the lanes. It was a technical instillation issue causing the delays, FISA executive director Matt Smith said. The expected winds were above anything we expected for the cables of our buoy systems. We had cables lying in lanes. FISA say this problem is now solved.Having lost a day to the elements, Smith said the plan is to schedule the W8+ and M8+ races and M4x and W4x repechages on Monday morning from 8.30 a.m. and then slot in as many of Sundays postponed races from 9.30 a.m. until 1.30 p.m. FISA say the programme will have caught up by Wednesday but if the weather causes further delays then there is a contingency plan of extending the regatta to Sunday, Aug. 14.We are old and experienced in staging regatta, Smith added. We have a lot of tricks up our sleeve, a lot of contingency plans. We could even have two rounds on the same day, we have done that in the past. We have advanced racing in the past. With nine days, including Sunday morning, we are confident we are ready for nearly anything they can throw at us.For Redgrave, he said the rowers safety was paramount but added if these windy conditions continue, then the organisers will face a logistical nightmare to fit in every race.None of the rowers wouldve liked to have run out in that, especially the ones who have the repechages which determine whether they stay in the Olympic regatta or not, Redgrave said as a plastic chair flew off behind him. We are an outdoor sport and in outdoor sports you are open to the elements and you have to deal with that. Weve raced in conditions similar to this and there is a point you have to call it and I guarantee you that 99 percent of the athletes will be pleased. He added: The tough bit is that if this weather continues. But what were hearing is that if the programme gets delayed and delayed then the boats going through repechages may not get the chance to race in them. That is eight out of 14 categories -- so the [Team GB] womens pair and mens four wont race today and if they dont get to race until Saturday when there are perfect conditions on Saturday morning, what do you do then? Do you have the heats, the repechage, the semifinal and final in one day?Youd have 14 events. Its not going to happen, it would be cancelled. The worst case scenario is that there will not be any Olympic medals given out at this Games. So if you start that at the doom and gloom then anything better than that will be good.Team GB team leader Sir David Tanner said he was absolutely supportive of the decision to postpone Sundays racing and FISA had made completely the right call.If we look at the programme to be frank it is possible for it to be completed in fewer days than eight, Tanner said. Youve seen the sessions are relatively short and from my point of view, and our rowers would say the same, if we get a window and can get on with it, they wont argue with racing in the morning or afternoon, we could do it. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Mind Your Biscuits proved hes more than just a very good New York-bred 3-year-old when he stepped up to graded stakes company for the first time on Saturday at Saratoga to win the Grade 2 Amsterdam under a rail-skimming ride by Joel Rosario.Mind Your Biscuitss victory gave his 22-year-old trainer, Robert Falcone Jr., the first graded stakes win of his career.Falcones decision to put blinkers on Mind Your Biscuits for his last start has seemingly made a huge difference. A son of Posse, Mind Your Biscuits rallied to a convincing 9-1/4-length allowance win against statebreds with the equipment change in his last start at Belmont Park, and he ran back to that effort in the 6-1/2-furlong Amsterdam.Maniacal, as expected, controlled the early pace while stalked from the outset by Its All Relevant and King Kranz through splits of 22.36 and 45.41 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and half-mile. Mind Your Biscuits trailed the field during the early running and even had to steady briefly to avoid Quijote after the latter stumbled badly, nearly unseating his jockey, Jose Ortiz, and quickly retreated through the field on the turn.Mind Your Biscuits saved ground into the stretch, began to accelerate once settling for the drive, finnding ample room inside the leader to assume command near the sixteenth pole before edging away to a 1-3/4- length victory.ddddddddddddManiacal, the 2-1 favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds, shook off his early pursuers while taken off the rail for the stretch run and proved no match for the winner. Its All Relevant weakened gradually to finish third.Quijote stumbled badly after appearing to clip heels with King Kranz when attempting to split the leaders with his bid on the turn.Mind Your Biscuits completed the distance in 1:15.25 and paid $8.30.I got a little worried when that other horse [Quijote] checked in front of him, but he got through it all, said Falcone. To win [my first graded stakes] on a day like this is just great.Falcone said the addition of blinkers has made a big difference in Mind Your Biscuitss recent improvement.Blinkers on was really like putting the finishing touches on him. They really helped him turn the corner, said Falcone. Hes always had a race horse attitude and hes matured a lot since coming into my barn. Getting Joel to ride him has also helped. Hes a great rider. He does a lot right. ' ' '
