TORONTO -- A franchise-best 14th straight win sure didnt come easy for the Cleveland Indians.Carlos Santana homered in the 19th inning off infielder Darwin Barney, and the Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Friday.I guess if youre going to set a record, you might as well do it the hard way, Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer said.Cleveland won 13 straight in 1942 and again in 1951.Its the longest winning streak since Atlanta won 14 straight in 2013, and the longest by an American League team since Oakland won 20 in a row in 2002.Santana doubled and scored in the third, as the surging Indians survived a marathon game and disappointed a sellout crowd that came for a Canada Day matinee that lasted 6 hours and 13 minutes, featured 19 pitchers and saw 34 left on base. The 19 innings matched the longest game in Blue Jays history. Toronto played 19 against Detroit in August 2014.Having used seven of their eight relievers, the Indians turned to Bauer, Saturdays scheduled starter, in the 15th. Bauer (7-2) worked five innings for the win.I thought what Trevor did was above and beyond, Indians manager Terry Francona said.Only closer Cody Allen, who was unavailable after working the previous three games, did not pitch for Cleveland. After seven Blue Jays relievers combined to pitch 10 1/3 scoreless innings, Toronto turned to infielder Ryan Goins in the 18th.Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall began the inning with singles, but Ramirez was caught in a rundown on Michael Martinezs fielders choice grounder. After intentionally walking Tyler Naquin, Goins escaped the bases-loaded jam by getting Chris Gimenez to ground into a double play.Barney, who started the game at second base, replaced Goins in the 19th. The infielders became the ninth and 10th position players to pitch for Toronto.Thats a weird game, Francona said. Shoot, theyre matching up with infielders.Santana greeted Barney (0-1) with a drive to right-center, his 17th.The Blue Jays loaded the bases with two outs in the 14th, but Joba Chamberlain got reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson to ground out.Donaldson nearly tied it in the 19th, but his drive to right was caught on the warning track.I thought he hit it out for sure, Bauer said. He hit it and I was like Youve got to be kidding me. Torontos only run came in the sixth, when Justin Smoak snapped an 0-for-18 slump by homering off Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin. It was the eighth of the season for Smoak and the 100th of his career. The Blue Jays lost major league RBI leader Edwin Encarnacion when he was ejected for arguing after being called out on strikes to end the first inning. Manager John Gibbons was also ejected. All three Blue Jays batters were called out on strikes in the first, with Encarnacion livid after being rung up on a 3-2 pitch that looked outside.Encarnacion made contact with home plate umpire Vic Carapazzas left shoulder after being ejected. Gibbons rushed out to break up the argument and was also tossed.Catcher Russell Martin was ejected by Carapazza after striking out to end the 13th. A fuming Martin had to be restrained by bench coach DeMarlo Hale and third-base coach Luis Rivera as he screamed at Carapazza. He just wasnt very good today, Martin said of Carapazza. All the things that everybody in the ballpark were thinking, I didnt say that. I felt like he really didnt have to throw me out.Clevelands Jason Kipnis extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single off Marcus Stroman in the third.UNEXPECTED EFFORTExpected to start Saturday, Bauer threw what he called a fairly intense bullpen and lifted weights Thursday, then lifted again before Fridays game. Physically, Im exhausted, he said.TRAINERS ROOMBlue Jays: OF Jose Bautista (left big toe) is not expected to return before the All-Star break, Gibbons said. Bautista was injured June 16 at Philadelphia.UP NEXTIndians: Clevelands starter for Saturday is unknown after Bauer was used in relief. Were working through that right now, Francona said afterward. Weve got some things weve got to talk through.Blue Jays: RHP Marco Estrada (5-3, 2.81) has allowed at least one home run in each of his past five starts. Air Max 270 React Outlet . Tinsley, a 10-year veteran, spent the last two seasons in Utah, where the point guard averaged 3. HOOVER, Ala. -- For the Southeastern Conference, football season cant get here soon enough. The league thats home to eight of the past 10 national titles has also been home to a large amount of offseason problems. Theres been an ongoing NCAA investigation at Mississippi, a Title IX lawsuit at Tennessee and several legal issues that havent painted the league as college footballs best citizens.Still, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey doesnt believe the league has an image problem. The body of work of this conference far outweighs those problems, yet we are attentive to those realities, Sankey said. We understand when the issues arise, we need to even be more attentive, be that on campus or as a collective group.Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen was one of the coaches at SEC Media Days who faced some pointed questions on Tuesday. The Bulldogs recently allowed prized recruit Jeffery Simmons to enroll in school and join the football team, even though hes still facing misdemeanor assault charges for striking a woman during a fight in March. The school announced a one-game suspension for Simmons in June, a decision that was roundly criticized as being too lenient. The league already has guidelines for potential transfers who have serious misconduct in their past, but those rules dont apply to incoming recruits.Mullen defended the decision, saying that he was thrilled that were having Jeffery as part of our family. Our university did a very, very thorough investigation into everything that happened within the situation there and came up with the conclusion that, you know, we felt that Jeffery deserved the opportunity to be part of our family, Mullen said.Ole Miss -- which won 10 games last season, including the Sugar Bowl -- has been in the middle of a long-running NCAA investigation that involves the football, womens basketball and track and field programs. The university has already self-imposed some penalties for football, including scholarship reductions and three years of probation. The NCAA can accept or add to those penalties. The case could drag on for several more months. Ole Miss asked to delay a hearing before the Committee on Infractions while it looks into draft-night allegations involving former left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was picked in the first round by the Miami Dolphins.Tunsil was the story of the draft after a bizarre 30-second video of him smoking from a gas mask-bong contraption was posted on his Twitter account just before the selections began. There was also a post on Tunsils Instagram account showing an alleged text conversation with a football staff member about arranging payment for billss.ddddddddddddTunsil said both accounts were hacked, but acknowledged following the draft that he accepted money from a coach while he was at Ole Miss.At best, it was an embarrassing episode for the school and the league. At worst, it could add to Ole Miss penalty from the NCAA. Coach Hugh Freeze and athletic director Ross Bjork have been mostly silent about the investigation over the past few months. The Rebels come to SEC Media Days on Thursday. The central thought must be -- must be -- we never have a team return a championship trophy, never vacate any wins, and never have one of our teams precluded from postseason competition because we either cant follow the NCAAs rules or cant meet the expectations for academic success, Sankey said.Other issues the leagues teams are facing:ALABAMA: The Tides star left tackle Cam Robinson and reserve defensive back Laurence Hootie Jones were arrested in Monroe, Louisiana, in May on drug and weapons charges, but the charges were later dropped after a sympathetic district attorney said he didnt want to ruin the lives of the two football players.Coach Nick Saban has not announced if the players will face discipline. He will talk at SEC Media Days on Wednesday.TENNESSEE: Tennessee recently reached a $2.48 million settlement of a Title IX lawsuit regarding its handling of assault complaints against athletes. The settlement included steps on how the school planned to improve the way it addresses incidents involving sexual misconduct. The lawsuit was filed in Nashville by eight unidentified women who said the school had violated Title IX regulations and fostered a hostile sexual environment through a policy of indifference toward assaults by athletes.GEORGIA: The Bulldogs have had eight arrests since Kirby Smart became the teams coach in December. Georgia defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter was arrested last weekend for the second time in five months on alcohol-related charges, including misdemeanor DUI and underage possession of alcohol. Hell miss at least two games per school policy.VANDERBILT: Two former football players -- Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey -- were both convicted on rape charges for a second time. The two players were originally convicted last year following the 2013 incident, but the verdicts were tossed because a juror did not reveal he was a victim of statutory rape. Two more players still await trial.-----Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP-----AP College Football website: www.collegefootballap.org ' ' '
