GULLANE -- If Scandinavia is to celebrate a first-ever major winner, "The Iceman" will need to stay solid in the Muirfield heat this weekend. Henrik Stenson has gone under the radar at the British Open this week but two rounds of 1-under 70 left the rejuvenated Swede tied with Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods and probably in a late group on Saturday. Stenson is fondly remembered as the man who stripped down to his underwear to play a shot from near a water hazard at a CA Championship at Doral in 2009. And for winning The Players Championship the same year by blowing away Tiger Woods with a final-round 66. On Sunday, he could write a whole new chapter. "Im up there and playing in a big tournament again," said Stenson, who placed third at the Open in 2008 and 10. "I think Ive got the experience to do well in these championships." Stensons oscillating career is back on an upward slope. After that victory at TPC Sawgrass, he was No. 4 in the world and had top-10 finishes at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship that year. As recently as 18 months ago, he was down to No. 230 and despairing about his game. In the depths of the second slump of his 15-year pro career, Stenson turned to sports psychologist Torsten Hansson and the decision has worked out well. He is one of the most consistent players on the European Tour this season and finished tied for third at last weeks Scottish Open, a three-hour drive north of Muirfield on the Highland links. His accuracy off the tee was outstanding in Inverness and he has kept that up at the Open, hitting 23 of 28 fairways despite them being as bouncy and fiery. "Tough conditions are something that I enjoy and suits my game," said Stenson, who is now ranked No. 30. "Obviously with the two rounds in red figures, Im keeping it, scoring-wise, pretty tight and not making too many mistakes. I felt like Ive played the course pretty conservative, but still done well out of it for the first two days." In Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander, Sweden hasnt been short of grand-slam champions in tennis but major wins in golf has so far been elusive for the nation, and for Scandinavia as a whole. Jesper Parnevik of Sweden was runner-up in 1994 -- when he lost out to fast-finishing Nick Price at Turnberry -- and 97. And few will forget Danish player Thomas Bjorns collapse at Royal St. Georges in 2003 when he was two up with three to play but took three shots to get out of a greenside bunker at No. 16 and lost to Ben Curtis. "Thats all Im thinking, no ones won it!" Stenson said of the Scandinavian major drought. "Obviously I would like to be the first Swede or Scandinavian to win a major. "But weve got some work to do before we talk about that. Id rather talk about how that feels on Sunday, if it happens." Salomon Schuhe Schweiz Outlet . His star quarterback may have escaped serious injury, but it looks like his standout running back will be sidelined for a while. Milanovich said Tuesday that Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray, the CFLs leading passer, is day-to-day with the knee injury he suffered in last weeks road win over Winnipeg, while running back Chad Kackert, last years Grey Cup MVP, is gone four to six weeks due to the knee injury he sustained versus the Bombers. "Ricky is day-to-day, hes significantly better than he was a year ago," Milanovich told reporters Tuesday. "Itll probably be a later in the week decision . . . but its not nearly the severity it was a year ago (when Ray was out with an injury to the same knee). "Chad Kackert is going to be a little longer. Were anticipating four-to-six weeks as an estimate. Obviously it can go either way . . . that one is a little bit worse." Toronto also released veteran linebacker Brandon Isaac. It was a surprising move given Isaac was a team captain and just one of five starters back from last years Grey Cup-winning defence. "This decision was made by the coaching staff that we think gives us a chance to be a little better at that position," Milanovich said. "I do appreciate what Brandons done and what he can do as a football player. "Sometimes you have to make hard choices that you think somebody else can do the job a little better." Milanovich said the club will look at giving youngsters Josh Gatlin and Jamie Robinson a shot at taking the vacant position but could also have new players in camp soon to challenge for it. Ray missed nearly a month last season after spraining the same left knee in a ggame.dddddddddddd Should Ray be unable to play July 30 when Toronto hosts B.C. at Rogers Centre, Milanovich said he has a replacement in mind but wouldnt say if it would be Zach Collaros or Trevor Harris. When Ray was hurt against Winnipeg, Milanovich had sophomores Collaros and Harris both take snaps for the remainder of the game. "Theyre both doing a fantastic job and theyre both working hard at it," Milanovich said. "Theyve both been in games now, which is a good thing. "Its the reason why we felt comfortable enough not to bring Jarious (veteran backup Jarious Jackson) back. Obviously he had a great opportunity in B.C. but we also felt like these young kids had a chance to grow and move into that role. If Ricky is not able to go then theyre going to have to really prove it against a great defence." Jackson served as Rays backup last season before retiring as a player and joining the Lions as their quarterback coach in the off-season. Fortunately for the Argos (2-2), they have the benefit of time. Toronto doesnt return to action until Tuesday when it hosts the B.C. Lions at Rogers Centre. With Kackert out, rookie Curtis Steele will move into the starting lineup against B.C. "Weve got a lot of confidence in him," Milanovich said. "Weve been trying to prepare him for this because you never know, when youre the backup tailback anything can happen. "Certainly its tough (losing Kackert) . . . we have to do a good job as coaches giving (Steele) a chance to be successful." Rookie defensive lineman Nekos Brown, who opened the season as a starter, and offensive lineman Michael Di Domenico were also released while the club added defensive backs Ricardo Colclough and Hugo Lopez and running back Chris Jennings.
