CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- South African prosecutors announced their intention to appeal against Oscar Pistorius six-year jail sentence for murder on Thursday, calling it shockingly lenient and a decision that could bring the countrys justice system into disrepute. The announcement prolongs the three-and-a-half year legal saga of Pistorius, the once-acclaimed double-amputee runner who fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in 2013.The National Prosecuting Authority said it would file its appeal papers on Thursday -- the day of the deadline to appeal.Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison by a judge on July 6, a sentence that is much shorter than the prescribed minimum of 15 years in jail for murder in South Africa. He could be released on parole after three years. We respectfully submit that the sentence of six years imprisonment, in all the circumstances, is disproportionate to the crime of murder committed, the prosecuting authority said in a statement announcing it would appeal. The sentence was shockingly too lenient, and has accordingly resulted in an injustice and has the potential to bring the administration of justice into disrepute, the prosecuting authority said.Steenkamps parents, Barry and June, said in a statement Thursday that they have always fully supported (chief prosecutor) Gerrie Nel and his teams fight for justice for Reeva. But Steenkamps parents had no input in the decision of the state to appeal, they said in the statement issued by their lawyer. The 29-year-old Pistorius is currently serving his six-year sentence in a prison in the South African capital, Pretoria. Under South African law, he could be eligible for parole after serving half the sentence. He also previously served one year in prison for manslaughter for shooting the 29-year-old Steenkamp, a model and reality TV star. That manslaughter conviction was upgraded to the more serious offense of murder after an earlier prosecution appeal, leading to a new sentencing.Prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence for Pistorius for the murder, but Judge Thokozile Masipa said there were compelling circumstances in Pistorius case to give him a lesser sentence. South African judges can deviate from minimum sentences if there are exceptional circumstances.Pistorius defense lawyers and family said immediately after the sentencing that they accepted the judges decision. On Thursday, Pistorius family spokeswoman Anneliese Burgess said in an email to The Associated Press that they wouldnt be commenting on the prosecutions appeal.Pistorius shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet cubicle door in his home in the pre-dawn hours of Valentines Day 2013. Pistorius testified that he killed Steenkamp by mistake, thinking she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom. Prosecutors said he shot her intentionally after an argument.Explaining her decision when she sentenced Pistorius two weeks ago, Judge Masipa said the former Olympic runner was a good candidate for rehabilitation, was unlikely to commit another crime, and had shown what appeared to be genuine remorse over Steenkamps death. Masipa also noted that Pistorius had lost his career and was ruined financially. Now, prosecutors must first ask the judge who sentenced Pistorius, Masipa, for permission to appeal her decision. If permission is granted, the appeal could go to South Africas Supreme Court, where prosecutors in Pistorius case have previously been successful.Last year, the prosecution successfully appealed against Pistorius initial manslaughter conviction and had it changed to murder. Masipa was also the judge who acquitted Pistorius of murder before that verdict was overturned on appeal. No date has been announced for the first hearing in the latest sentence appeal.---Follow Gerald Imray on Twitter: www.twitter.com/GeraldImrayAPCheap Nike Air Max 90 Premium Womens .C. -- Calgarys Kevin Koe did it the hard way again. If what they say is true and everybody loves an underdog, 2016 will be remembered as one of the best years in the almanacs of sport. From the unheralded Danny Willett taking out the US Masters title to 5000 to 1 shot Leicester City winning the English Premier League, it has been a great year to be an outsider. Are the Cronulla Sharks also about to follow suit and write the next chapter in a growing collection of sporting fairy tales?Cronulla, for decades, have provided more punchlines than punch in the NRL but as they celebrate their 50th year they are circling a maiden rugby league premiership.Just two years ago, Cronulla claimed the wooden spoon after becoming embroiled in a supplements scandal that disrupted their season and threatened the clubs existence; how times have changed. When UBET tabled their first market for season 2016, the Sharks were quoted at a generous $17 to break the drought. They firmed into $11 ahead of the season opener but the initial odds appeared more than justified after two defeats in the first three rounds.Their slow start saw them slump to 10th on the NRL ladder, their premiership odds ease back out to $13 and left their long-suffering fans feeling as empty as their trophy cabinet.Fast-forward to round 20, and Cronulla are closing on their first minor premiership since 1999 with hope growing as fast as the odds are shortening that this could finally be their year. They are now $4.25 second-favouritess with UBET.dddddddddddd?Since their 22-12 loss to Manly in mid-March, they have gone on a 14-match unbeaten run and, as each round passes, interest in the Sharks has steadily increased from a nibble into a frenzy.?They are almost unbackable this Sunday to equal the fifth-best mark set by Souths, Manly and Melbourne with 15 straight victories when they take on the bottom-placed Newcastle. The Roosters team of 1975 hold the longest winning streak with 19 matches, but UBET rate the Sharks of 2016 as a genuine chance of breaking that record -- quoting $13 for them to reach 21 by the end of the regular season. And their draw looks favourable with winnable games in the following rounds until the week before the finals, when they will run into fellow premiership contenders Melbourne.?If Cronulla manage to clear that obstacle then the focus will shift to an inconceivable 24 straight wins through the finals; achieve that and nobody could deny them their first ever premiership triumph.ESPN columnist Brett Kimmorley is already a believer; hes predicted his former club will keep the run going, and rubbished the theory that they need to lose a game before the finals.Winning form is good form, Kimmorley said. They havent been at their best lately but theyve still found ways to win which is important in the finals.
