Lynsey Armitage proudly represents Team Northumbria as the oldest player in the Superleague and hopes to make her experience count against Surrey Storm. The 40-year-old former England player is expected to feature on the court when Team Northumbria take on reigning champions Surrey on Monday night, live on Sky Sports 2 from 7.30pm.Armitage admits she could not resist a call to compete in the Vitality Superleague again and the seasoned shooter believes she offers a different attacking option to Team Northumbria. It was too good of an opportunity to say no, said Armitage. I still captain a Premier League side, but to get asked to come back and play Superleague, why would you say no to it?Its a fantastic opportunity, not only to play netball, but also introduce a different style of play to a team that hasnt got a tall shooter. Its a little bit of a learning curve for the Northumbria girls as well, because they are all quite young. With the experience that Ive got, I stay quite calm and bring a different dynamic to the team. Surrey claimed victory over Team Northumbria earlier this season Armitage enjoys her status as the most senior player in the league, but admits the rapidly developing sport is becoming increasingly physical. She said: I was 40 in January, which was the week I got asked to play actually. I did answer: you do know how old I am?There shouldnt be an age limit on what you can do, if youve got a decent enough ability. It should be about that, more than the age.Reflecting on changes in Netball, Armitage added: Its amazing. Its not just to do with the sponsorship and the money. Just the physical ability of the players now. All the girls are in the gym and the sheer strength of the girls, I think you have to be more of athlete. Team Northumbria will line-up against Surrey Storm on Monday night Team Northumbria have picked up confidence boosting wins over Loughborough Lightning and Yorkshire Jets this season.Armitage admits the team is a work in progress, but believes they can emerge as genuine title rivals in the coming years.I dont think anyone would have had us down to turn over Loughborough like we did and it was a great day, she said.It just shows the depth in the squad and the mental strength of the team. It was a shame we lost to Celtic Dragons the other week. But this a young squad and they are looking to progress this team, so that in the next few years they are competing with the likes of Storm and Manchester Thunder.Watch Team Northumbria take on Surrey Storm, live on Sky Sports 2 from 7.30pm on Monday. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Chinas Chen Long won gold Saturday in mens badminton, handing Malaysias Lee Chong Wei his third straight Olympic silver medal and signaling Chens place as the games new power.Chen fell face down on the court then rose weeping after his 2-0 victory. He then threw three rackets and his shirt into the crowd, which was largely filled with Chinese supporters, before draping himself in the Chinese flag.Lee, while old by badminton standards at 33, was world No. 1 and the favorite coming in. But he faced massive pressure not to lose another Olympic gold, and was coming off a hard-fought match a day earlier against Chinas Lin Dan, the man who beat him in the last two Olympic finals, that felt more like a gold-medal contest than a semifinal. Both Lee and Lin are considered by many to be the best players of their era, and maybe of all time.Chen is now making his place at the top.Chen led early in the first game of the best-of-three match then trailed before capitalizing on repeated Lee errors at the net to pull ahead and win 21-18. Chen then fought off an early Lee lead in the second game to power by the Malaysian 21-18.Though Lee played aggressively, often staring Chen down after winners, Chen seemed to have an answer to both Lees power, parrying his smashes, and to hiis touch, repeatedly finding his drop shots and lifting them safely toward Lees backcourt.dddddddddddd Chens smashes more often found the lines for winners and his subtle net shots often had Lee flustered. The triumph of youth was also the story in the bronze medal match as Viktor Axelsen of Denmark beat two-time Olympic champion Lin 2-1 earlier Saturday.Despite Chens victory and an earlier gold for China in mens doubles, it has been a tough Olympics for China, which has lost its place as badmintons overwhelming superpower. Several top players, including medalists from past games, lost early in Rio. China swept all five badminton gold medals at the 2012 London Games. On Friday, Carolina Marin of Spain beat P.V. Sindhu, ranked world No. 10, made a strong, surprising run through the tournament. Japans Nozomi Okuhara took bronze.---Follow Foster Klug at www.twitter.com/apklug.
