PARIS -- Dimitar Berbatov joined Monaco from Fulham on Friday in the latest chapter of the mercurial forwards career on an otherwise quiet final day of the transfer window in France. Monaco is challenging fellow big-spender Paris Saint-Germain for the French title and needed to sign a striker to compensate for Colombia striker Radamel Falcaos long-term injury. Falcao is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee on Jan. 22. "Im happy, excited, and a little bit nervous to be honest," the 33-year-old Berbatov said. "Im looking forward to training with my new teammates and to open a new chapter in my career." Berbatov shone in spells for Manchester United, Tottenham and Fulham, scoring 94 league goals in 229 league games. Prior to that, he netted 69 goals in 154 league games for German side Bayer Leverkusen. He also scored 48 goals in 77 matches for Bulgaria before retiring from the national team. "Dimitar will bring us all his experience and talent. Of course, his arrival is connected to Falcaos injury," Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said. "Hes played in big clubs such as Manchester United and hes a great striker. We still have two competitions to play in and he will be an asset." Monaco also reinforced its defence by signing centre half Aymen Abdennour on loan from Toulouse until the end of the season, with an option to buy the Tunisia international. Meanwhile, having spent the off-season trying to sell key players in order to raise funds, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas spent the last hours of the January transfer window turning down bids. Lyons highly-rated midfielder Clement Grenier chose not to move to Newcastle, which is trying to replace Yohan Cabaye after selling him to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Newcastle coach Alan Pardew had spoken about Grenier in glowing terms and the club was in advanced talks with Lyon. "Ive decided to stay with Lyon and, for me, the best place to be is Lyon," Grenier said Friday. "I had no intention of leaving this winter. We still have a lot of things we want to achieve, both collectively and individually -- with a view to the World Cup. Its the best thing for my personal improvement." There were also offers for striker Bafetimbi Gomis, who will be out of contract at the end of the season and who Aulas desperately tried to sell in August, while the player steadfastly refused to go. Marseille right back Rod Fanni also knocked back a chance to join Queens Park Rangers, which plays in Englands second-tier Championship, according to La Provence newspaper. Midfielder Joshua Guilavogui and former Bordeaux left back Benoit Tremoulinas joined Saint-Etienne on loan from Atletico Madrid and Dynamo Kyiv respectively. Saint-Etienne has an option to buy Tremoulinas for (euro)4 million ($5.4 million) at the end of the season. Nantes signed striker Itay Shechter on loan from Hapoel Tel Aviv with an option to sign him for two years. The Israel forward scored 33 league goals in 61 games during his Hapoel career. At the time, the team itself wasnt treading water too well. After Kelly was signed near the end of August he managed to finish 2013 with 22 catches and a respectable 321 yards by the end of the season, while the Bombers finished in the league cellar at 3-15. He finished fifth on the team receiving list. The lean six-foot-five import is now entering his fourth season in the CFL and has a combined 20 starts with the Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats, where he spent his first two seasons. Kelly joined a team last year that had just sacked its president, general manager and offensive co-ordinator. They also were still in the process of burning through four quarterbacks, hoping to find one who could find a way out of their slump. "When you need timing and stuff like that you want to get familiar with a quarterback and when it changes up it makes it difficult," says the soft-spoken Georgia native. This year, Kelly says hes benefiting from a chance to attend training camp, learn the offence from the ground up and become familiar with the teams quarterbacks, before he has to play a regular-season game. "I think it will give me the ability to be a little more comfortable," he said. "You come in the middle of the season and youre just kind of thrown in there, and you know just like thrown in a pool and just trying to survive . . . "Getting in from the start you get all the details and all the coaching." Kelly has had a goood camp so far as the first pre-season game approaches Monday, when the Toronto Argonauts visit.dddddddddddd Its about the only game confirmed this year as the league and players association remain embroiled in a contract dispute. Starting quarterback Drew Willy and Max Hall, who was the most consistent quarterback at the end of last season for the Bombers, both like the way Kelly has been hauling in passes at camp "Weve had some good connections already in the past few days. Hes done a good job on the seam routes and corners," said Willy, who likes Kellys size. "His catch radius is very big and hes done a great job for us and were looking forward to him helping us." Hall has also had a pretty good camp himself and likes what Kelly delivers. "Aaron Kelly is a good football player," says Hall, the only quarterback the Bombers decided to keep from 2013. "Hes just easy to throw the ball to. But, for being such a big guy, hes got a nice stride, hes quick on his feet. And what I really like about him, he knows how to separate man coverage. And so, as a quarterback, hes a guy you can go to, a guy you can trust." There are four quarterbacks in camp right now for the Bombers, five if you count a guest slot for the University of Manitoba Bisons. Getting to work with that many is another bonus to attending camp, says Kelly, should something happen during the season that would force a change. "In camp you get a chance to work with everyo
