TORONTO -- Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby picked up exactly where he left off last spring when he was hoisting the Stanley Cup as captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins: dominating.Crosby was a one-man wrecking crew as host Canada opened the World Cup of Hockey on Saturday with an emphatic 6-0 victory over the Czech Republic. Sure, the three points on a goal and two assists were an impressive way for the defending playoff MVP from last Junes Stanley Cup run to kick off his season, but as is almost always the case with Crosby, its the little things -- the attention to detail -- that paint the true picture. And on this night the picture was a pleasing one for Canadian fans. After being stymied on an early breakaway, Crosby banked home the first goal of the game off Czech goalie?Michal Neuvirth from the goal line. Later, he added an assist on a goal by Brad Marchand off a faceoff win by Patrice Bergeron that put me in mind of an overtime goal he drew up in the Stanley Cup finals against the San Jose Sharks. As per usual with Crosby, few things in the game happen by chance. In the final minute of the first period, Crosby sped back down the ice to break up a Czech 2-on-1 and then, even though he didnt get credit for an assist, ran some interference in the Czech zone, setting up a Bergeron goal with 0.7 seconds left in the first period to give the Canadians an insurmountable 3-0 lead. For good measure, Crosby added another pretty assist on a Joe Thornton goal early in the second.Saturdays dominating win made it clear that whoever is going to knock off Canada in this tournament is going to have to find a way to negate the Bergeron-Crosby-Marchand line that has been together since the moment Canada opened training camp.In fact, head coach Mike Babcock penciled in the offensive trio months before Team Canada ever took to the ice, looking to put an end to the backstory that has been part of the past two Olympic Games: Whom will Crosby play with?Babcock was the coach in both Vancouver and Sochi when Canada won gold, but it took time each tournament to find wingers who meshed with Crosby. Thats clearly not an issue here, as Crosby and the two Boston Bruins are a force as Canada is playing with a much different tempo than they did in Sochi on the Olympic-size ice.In short, Crosby served notice in Game 1 of the World Cup that whether hes wearing a Penguins jersey or the red and white of Team Canada, hes at a whole other level. Not that any of that should come as a surprise.Three stars1. Sidney Crosby, C, Canada: Three-point night, ferocious backchecking ... if Canada was looking for its captain to set a tone for an important opening-night win over the overmatched Czechs, they got it in spades.2. Carey Price, G, Canada: There was a point in the first half of the first period when the flow of the game was much less lopsided than it became, and Price did his job, denying Ondrej Palat on an early deflection and then shutting the door on the Czech power play on the night. And lets remember this was Prices first meaningful game since last November after injury issues.3. Drew Doughty, D, Canada: Doughty was a presence on both sides of the puck all night. Ross Stripling Dodgers Jersey . The team said Saturday that Lopez was hurt during its 121-120 overtime loss at Philadelphia on Friday. Coach Tom Thibodeau says the former MVP will probably start travelling with the team in the next few weeks. Rose tore the meniscus in his right knee at Portland in November and was ruled out for the remainder of the season by the Bulls. LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Queen finally was dethroned -- at least for a day.Tepin, the reigning queen of the filly-mare turf ranks, was unable to make sufficient headway after Photo Call sped away to a huge lead before holding sway for a 2-3/4-length upset in the 19th running of the Grade 1 First Lady on a sunny Saturday at Keeneland. With Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux sending her out of the far outside post, Photo Call opened up on her nine rivals going into the first turn of the one-mile race and never looked back, dealing Tepin her first defeat in nine races.Photo Call returned $61.40 after finishing in 1:35.62 over a firm turf. Tepin, the 2-5 favorite, was another 3-1/2 lengths before Celestine, with Nemoralia another three lengths back in fourth. She was really full of herself, Desormeaux said. I rode her with confidence.Purchased as a broodmare prospect last November at Keeneland for $3 million by Vinnie and Teresa Viola, Photo Call had won once in six starts since being turned over to trainer Todd Pletcher while running in longer turf races. Desormeaux said the turn-back to a mile meant it was possible Photo Call would be outrun for the lead and that Pletcher had instructed him to cover her up.Laughing, he said: That wasnt happening.Indeed, Photo Call led by seven lengths after a half-mile, by 10 lengths after six furlongs, and by 5-1/2 lengths passing the furlong pole. Tepin, ridden by Julien Leparoux, dug in down the stretch but had simply gotten too far behind to threaten.I cant take anything away from the winner, Leparoux said.Pletcher said from Belmont Park that we planned to shorten her up to see if wwe could get her back off the pace.dddddddddddd. Kent said she was pretty keen, so he just decided to drops his hands, called an audible and it worked out.The defeat does little to change the year-end goal for Tepin, who now proceeds to the Nov. 5 Breeders Cup Mile at Santa Anita as one of the favorites. Tepin defeated males last year in the BC Mile at Keeneland as part of a remarkable eight-race win streak that came to an end Saturday. The goal has always been the Breeders Cup Mile, a repeat there, said Norman Casse, son of and assistant to trainer Mark Casse. I havent lost any confidence in her. I think we are still set up to do that and shell move forward from this race.Unlike most of the FallStars Weekend stakes at Keeneland, there is no Win and Youre In berth to the Breeders Cup attached to the First Lady.Pletcher said its doubtful Photo Call will stretch back out in the Nov. 5 Filly-Mare Turf at 1-1/4 miles. Last year, Photo Call was fifth in the Filly-Mare turf when making her last start for Mrs. P.K. Cooper and trainer Graham Motion.I talked to Vinnie Viola right after the race and he mentioned maybe the Mile, Pletcher said. She did win at Santa Anita before, so well see.Tepin had already earned a Win and Youre In to the BC Mile for owner Robert Masterson after defeating males in the Woodbine Mile last month. The $2 exacta (10-2) paid $184.80, the $1 trifecta (10-2-8) returned $266.30, and the 10-cent superfecta (10-2-8-5) was worth $198.15.-- additional reporting by David Grening ' ' '
