ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley stopped short Friday of giving quarterback Tyrod Taylor a vote of confidence that he will remain the teams starter next season. No, no, no, Whaley told WGR 550 when asked if any decision had been made about retaining Taylor for 2017. Weve said from Day 1 that were going to give him this whole season, and after that, well sit down with the coaches, the ownership group and make the decision. Now 26 games into his career as the Bills starting quarterback, Taylor has posted a 14-12 record but has seen a decline from last season in several key statistics, including completion percentage, yards per pass attempt, touchdowns and passer rating. Overall, the Bills average 181.5 passing yards per game, which ranks 32nd in the NFL.You got to look at the whole season, Whaley said. Hes got four more games to write this chapter. And then after this season, like everybody on the team, were going to do the evaluation, and well go from there. But this season is one of those things where hes done some things really good to get us to six wins. But just like everybody on the team, there are some plays that he wishes he could do over.As part of a contract extension signed in August, the Bills must guarantee Taylor $30 million if he remains on their roster past the fourth day of the 2017 league year, which begins in March. His performance this season has raised questions about whether the Bills will keep Taylor as their quarterback next season. After Taylor went 10-of-26 passing for 89 yards over the final three quarters of the Bills 38-24 loss Sunday to the Oakland Raiders, the quarterback appeared frustrated as he spoke to reporters at his regular Wednesday news conference. Walking away from the podium after answering questions, Taylor threw down his practice jersey and said, Im done talking.Ive taken everything that yall have stood up here and asked me, right in the chest, he said during the news conference. It doesnt affect me emotionally or physically. I take that every week. Whoever yall want to blame, Ill take that. Like I said, my job is to get the team into a position where we can win Sundays. Can I be better, yes? But it doesnt just take me; its a collective effort out there on the field, each and every Sunday. At 6-6, the Bills have an 8 percent chance of making the postseason, according to ESPNs Football Power Index. They host the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday before ending their regular season with games against the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.Taylors struggles and the Bills declining postseason chances have raised speculation that rookie third-stringer Cardale Jones, a fourth-round pick, could see time at quarterback, but Whaley shot down that idea Friday.I would not [like to see him play], Whaley told WGR 550. That means something terrible happened, and were not looking for that. What were looking for is to come out Sunday and get a W against the Steelers. BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles seem to bring out the best in Mookie Betts.Betts homered twice and drove in five runs, a performance that almost single-handedly carried the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 victory Tuesday night.Bostons cleanup hitter launched a three-run drive in the fifth inning and added a tiebreaking two-run shot in the seventh. Betts is batting .426 with 12 homers and 18 RBI in 11 games against the Orioles this season.Exactly one-quarter of his 28 home runs this season have come in Baltimore, where the left-field foul line is a mere 333 feet from the plate. He feels comfortable in this ballpark and obviously sees the ball well, Boston manager John Farrell said.Maybe thats the reason for his success. Maybe not.Im going to continue to say I dont know why, Betts said. Im just trying to put good swings on it and enjoy it.Betts had three homers and eight RBI in a 16-2 win over Arizona on Sunday, so its not as if hes only picking on the Orioles.Im sure there are some numbers to dictate that its more us, manager Buck Showalter said, but hes been having that type of year against most everybody. The victory lifted Boston into a tie with Baltimore in the AL East, one game behind division-leading Toronto. We all are well aware of what is at stake, where we are in the standings and who is around us, Farrell said. The Red Sox were in first place on July 21, then lost 13 of 20 before their current streak of five wins in row.Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez had a no-hitter before leaving in the fifth inning with left hamstring tightness. The Red Sox hope they caught it early enough to keep the lefty in the rotation without missing a turn.Matt Barnes kept the Orioles hitless until Steve Pearce reached on a dribbler that got past the mound with one out in the seventh.Baltimore endedd up batting around and tying the game at 3.dddddddddddd After Matt Wieters hit a two-run single, Brad Ziegler (1-3) walked Adam Jones with the bases loaded before striking out Jonathan Schoop. The deadlock didnt last long. After Andrew Benintendi hit a leadoff double and Xander Bogaerts drew a one-out walk, Gallardo struck out Ortiz with a 2-2 fastball. Betts hit the next pitch over the left-field wall.Gallardo lasted five innings, surviving a line shot off his right forearm in the fifth. It got me pretty good, he said. Its a little stiff, but Ill be all right.PAPELBON RUMORFarrell confirmed that the team has had discussions with reliever Jonathan Papelbon, who was recently released by Washington.TRAINERS ROOMOrioles: Showalter expects reliever Darren ODay (rotator cuff strain) to spend the minimum time on the DL and return on Aug. 27. ...
