Cam Newton sustained a concussion after a hard hit in the fourth quarter on Sunday, and this time the Carolina Panthers didnt take any chances.Newton was pulled after he was hit hard, but cleanly, by Falcons linebacker Deion Jones on a successful 2-point conversion run that pulled the Panthers within 34-18. Derek Anderson came on to replace the 2015 NFL MVP. The Panthers later confirmed that their star quarterback, who did not speak with reporters after the game, had a concussion. The Falcons, behind huge days for Matt Ryan and Julio Jones, pulled away for a 48-33 victory, dropping the Panthers to 1-3.In the Panthers season-opening Super Bowl rematch against the Denver Broncos, Newton took four helmet-to-helmet shots, but never came out of the game, raising questions about whether the Panthers or officials had followed proper protocol. Defenders Brandon Marshall and Darian Stewart were later fined by the NFL.Newton was not the only quarterback injured Sunday as Denvers Trevor Siemian was sidelined during the Broncos game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an injury to his left, non-throwing shoulder. The second-quarter injury led to the debut of rookie first round draft choice Paxton Lynch, who led a field goal drive and later threw a touchdown pass in a game delayed by severe weather.Tampa Bay also sustained a significant injury in the game as four-time Pro Bowl tackle Gerald McCoy left with a calf injury during the first half. McCoy left the field early in the second quarter, walking gingerly with assistance from a trainer, and the team said he would not return.Arizona, meanwhile, lost Carson Palmer early in the fourth quarter of their 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Palmer was injured when his head slammed the turf on a sack by Aaron Donald. He originally was evaluated for concussion symptoms by trainers on the sideline, then taken to the locker room, not to return.Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis also left the game Sunday with a hamstring injury early in the second half, and Carolina wide receiver Devin Funchess left the game in the fourth quarter with a toe injury. The Washington Redskins, who lost four starters last week, had three defenders go down in the teams victory over the Browns. Top pass rusher Ryan Kerrigan left in the second quarter with an elbow injury, fellow linebacker Sua Cravens left in the third with a concussion and safety David Bruton left in the fourth with a concussion. It also was a difficult day for players in the secondary. The Ravens, who allowed four touchdown passes by Derek Carr, the last a game-winner with 2:12 remaining, lost cornerback Maurice Canady in the first quarter with a thigh injury. Safeties Eric Weddle and Lardarius Webb both underwent concussion protocol in the fourth quarter, but were cleared to return. In the Jets 27-17 loss to Seattle, cornerback Darrelle Revis sustained a thigh injury in the fourth quarter and didnt return for New York, and right guard Brian Winters left in the second quarter with a head injury after he slammed helmets with a Seahawks defender. Winters was also called for unnecessary roughness on the play.In other injuries:-49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman sustained a lower left leg injury in the third quarter and left the 49ers game against Dallas. The other pitcher has very few starts remaining this season.Thats the pitching matchup Tuesday night as the Padres host the Cubs for the second of three games at Petco Park ... or what Cubs fans call Wrigley Field West.Starting for the Cubs will be reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta, whose 15-5 record and 2.75 earned run average in 24 starts puts him in the running for a repeat. But Arrieta says that is not his focus heading into the stretch.Weve done very well, Arrieta said recently. But everyone knows its about what happens from here on out.Starting for the Padres Tuesday night will be left-hander Christian Friedrich, who will be making the 18th start of a season that is winding down.Yes, the Padres still have almost six weeks to go until the finish line. But they will be shutting Friedrich down any start now.Hes already worked twice as many innings this season in a different role than he worked last year, Padres manager Andy Green said recently. We like him. Were going to protect him.Friedrich, 29, has a 4-9 record with a 4.69 ERA in 17 starts for the Padres since being promoted from Triple-A El Paso on May 13. He has worked 94 innings. He also worked 18 innings in the minors before joining the Padres. Last season, working out of the Colorado Rockies bullpen, Friedrich worked 58 1/3 innings in 68 appearances. At the moment, Friedrich is a member of a six-man rotation. But Green has said the Padres will likely return to a five-man rotation with two days off in a span of five dayss starting Thursday.ddddddddddddThe sixth man out in all likelihood will be Friedrich.I feel good, said Friedrich, but I know the thinking. As for Arrieta, hes on full throttle. But he hasnt had great luck in his two previous starts at Petco Park. Arrieta is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in the Padres home, although he hasnt pitched there since 2014. Arrieta is 9-2 on the road this season with a 3.29 ERA in 12 starts. He is also coming off one of his weaker starts. Against the Brewers on Aug. 18, Arrieta issued a career-high seven walks and gave up and allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings. He still collected his 15th win in the Cubs 9-6 victory.Arrietas 2.75 ERA ranks fifth in the National League, just ahead of Jon Lesters 2.81 mark after Monday night.Arrietta leads the major leagues with a .186 opponents batting average and figures to be facing five, and possibly six, left-handed hitters Tuesday night, including switch-hitters Yangervis Solarte and Luis Sardinas on the left side of the Padres infield. Recently, the Padres have been using the left-handed Brett Wallace at first in some games against right-handed pitchers with first baseman Wil Myers moving to right.Sardinas, who was promoted from Triple-A El Paso Monday, will be making his first start at shortstop for the Padres and is expected to make the majority of the starts at short for the rest of the season as the Padres cut back on the starts make by former Chicago White Sox Alexei Ramirez.
