In a wide-ranging interview with GQ, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton told the magazine he doesnt think he is subjected to extra scrutiny because he is black. Its not racism, Newton told GQ. Everybodys entitled to their own opinion.Newton has been critiqued for his playing style and demeanor on and off the field throughout his five seasons in the NFL, and some have pointed to Newtons race as part of the reason he receives such criticism. The quarterback, however, dismissed that idea to GQ.I dont want this to be about race, because its not. Its not, Newton said. Like, were beyond that. As a nation. Before Super Bowl 50, Newton created headlines when he described himself as an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they havent seen nothing they can compare me to. He later eased off those comments in the run-up to his first Super Bowl appearance, when he became the sixth black quarterback to start the NFLs title game.I dont even want to touch the topic of black quarterback, because I think this game is bigger than black, white or green, Newton said in February before the game. I think we limit ourselves when we just label ourselves just black, this, that and the third. I wanted to bring awareness because of that, but yet I dont think I should be labeled just a black quarterback, because its bigger things in this sport that need to be accomplished.Asked by GQ about other hot-button national issues, Newton said he doesnt have an opinion on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and wouldnt say whether he voted for North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory.I love people too much to care about those type of things, Newton told GQ.McCrorys controversial House Bill 2, which eliminated antidiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, has brought scrutiny to North Carolina and led to the NBA removing the 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte, the city where Newton leads the defending NFC champion Panthers.Newton said he would rather let people develop their own opinions rather than advocate for his positions.Ill let you be the judge. I dont look at it like that, he told GQ. I look at it like some people have certain beliefs, and I have my own belief, and we can agree to disagree on certain things. But this is what makes sports so amazing, that we can start a discussion around a table, in the newspaper, in the magazines, that will get peoples attention. And thats what sports does.Newton also said he would let his son, Chosen, who was born in December, play football when he grows up.GQ released its September cover story featuring Newton on Monday.Basketball Shoes 2020 . Basketball Shoes From China . -- Jonathan Drouin gave Halifax the boost it needed to edge host Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-2 in a shootout in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.NEW ORLEANS -- For all of Dan Quinns background as a defensive specialist, the Atlanta Falcons second-year coach is fielding an offense about as good as anyone right now.Matt Ryan has been efficient. Running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman are wearing down defenses while keeping one another fresh. The offensive line is winning praise for its run-blocking and pass-protection. And the Falcons are outscoring even explosive opponents, as they did in a 45-32 triumph over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. We wanted to stay aggressive and keep attacking, Quinn said. The team did a very nice job of mixing up the run and pass.It was a satisfying triumph for the Falcons (2-1), who came in with just two victories in their 10 previous trips to the Superdome. It also made Atlanta the early front-runner in the NFC South. The winless Saints (0-3), by contrast, are in last place and were less competitive against the Falcons than they were in their first two losses to Oakland and the New York Giants.Saints quarterback Drew Brees is still racking up gaudy numbers. He passed for 376 yards and three TDs against Atlanta. But he never seems to have much margin for error. He threw one interception on a tipped ball and it was returned 90 yards the other way by rookie linebacker Deion Jones, who just happens to be a New Orleans native and LSU alum.Afterward, Brees lamented that Mondays result might have been different if not for a pair of major Saints mistakes -- his interception and a muffed Atlanta punt that the Falcons converted into an 11-yard touchdown drive.Theres no magic formula. Theres no magic offensive play or defensive scheme thats going to win you a game, Brees said. Its about each guy doing what theyve been coached to do, to their best ability. Theres going to be mistakes made at times, but lets not be a team thats going to beat themselves by doing things you know that will get you beat. Some other developments of note coming out of Atlantas win the Big Easy:BACKFIELD BONANZAFreeman and Coleman are taking pressure off Ryan by running well and turning short receptions into considerable gains.dddddddddddd They combined for 296 yards from scrimmage and four TDs in New Orleans. Freeman rushed for 152 yards on just 14 carries, an average of nearly 11 yards per run. He scored his lone TD on a 13-yard pass from Ryan and finished with 55 yards receiving on five catches. Coleman ran for three TDs, once from 6 yards out and twice from 2 yards.BATTERED DEFENSEThe Saints entered the season with little defensive depth and appear to be reeling from injuries. Key players sidelined by injuries against Atlanta included defensive tackles Sheldon Rankins and Tyeler Davison, cornerbacks Delvin Breaux and P.J. Williams, strong safety Kenny Vaccaro and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. They wound up allowing 442 net yards against Atlanta, but when Saints coach Sean Payton was asked about the toll injuries have taken, he responded, That is not going to be an excuse for not playing smart.RYANS EFFICIENCYThe Falcons star quarterback didnt keep pace with Brees -- and didnt need to. But he did play a relatively clean game. His two TD passes gave him seven TDs against one interception through three games. He is also completing about 71 percent of his passes for 323 yards per game.FLEENERS FORMAfter struggling to get involved in New Orleans passing game, tight end Coby Fleener -- a top acquisition in free agency -- looked in sync with Brees. Fleener caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, his best performance by far as a Saint.JONES RISEJones has demonstrated a lot of upside in his first three regular season games as a pro. In addition to his pivotal interception for a score in New Orleans, Jones was in on nine tackles and credited with two passes defended. For the young season, Jones is now second on the club with 25 solo or assisted tackles.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
