It might not have the national cachet of Duke-North Carolina or Kentucky-Louisville.But the yearly meeting of No. 25 Iowa State and Iowa, which occurs Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, has a special meaning all its own, according to Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. This is a rivalry that means a lot to a lot of people, he said. It means a lot to both teams for RPI, national rankings and NCAA Tournament potential. It has a lot of importance.Even this season, with the Hawkeyes stumbling out of the gate to a 4-5 start that includes a four-game losing streak, including a bad home loss to an Omaha team that the Cyclones (6-2) routed 91-47 on Monday night, this game is one thats circled on everyones calendar in Iowa. How meaningful is this game? When a ranked Iowa State rallied from a 20-point deficit last season to topple the unranked Hawkeyes 83-82 in Ames on Monte Morris floater with nine seconds left, Cyclones students stormed the floor and actually broke the leg of a Des Moines columnist on press row.During a Tuesday press conference, second-year Iowa State coach Steve Prohm was still marveling at how his crowd reacted to the opening stages of the teams rally. This crowd was going crazy when we cut the lead from 20 to 18, he said. A lot of places, the crowd would be quiet or booing. Iowa just came out and hit us in the mouth, but that was as good a rivalry performance as Ive seen.Morris led the charge last season with 20 points, nine assists and just one turnover, and Matt Thomas fired in six 3-pointers and 19 points. It was the third straight Cyclones win in the series, matching the programs all-time high against its rival. If its going to make it four straight, Iowa State will probably need to score a lot of points. Although the Hawkeyes are nowhere close to the ability of last years team that was ranked in the top five at one point in February, they are still averaging 86.7 points per game.Senior guard Peter Jok is the name of the game for Iowa. The lone returning starter from last seasons team, Jok is firing in 23.9 ppg, hitting nearly 40 percent of his 3-pointers and going 47 of 51 at the foul line.He can get his shot any time he wants, whether they run good offense or bad offense, Prohm said of Jok. We have to do a good job denying him the catch. Our defense will have to travel over there.Cordell Pemsl (10.6) is also averaging in double figures for the Hawkeyes, which are still in the process of figuring out a playing rotation. Nine players have started games and only Jok has started all nine games.Morris (14.2 ppg, 6.3 assists) leads four Cyclones in extra digits. Deonte Burton (14.1 ppg, 7.6 rebounds), Nazareth Mitrou-Long (12.8 ppg, 6.0 rebounds) and Thomas (11.3 ppg, 5.0 rebounds) can also score 25 on any night.Discount Air Max . 10 Texas Rangers jersey for one last time. Speaking Thursday on TSN 1050 Thursday, the Leafs GM also touched on the questions surrounding the teams leadership and the struggles of his big-name free-agent signing. “Its not from lack of effort from the coaching staff.CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia wide receivers coach Marques Hagans is hoping for big seasons from his guys in the Cavaliers new Air Raid offense, and he hopes some of those contributions come from juniors Andre Levrone and Doni Dowling. Both are coming back from injuries that turned last season into a washout.I look at everybody the same, but I guess Im personally hoping those guys can stay healthy because last year they werent, Hagans said. Im a little more pulling for those guys because they missed last year.As a freshman, Levrone demonstrated a knack for leaping in traffic to make the catch and had several highlight reel grabs among his 15 receptions, including two for touchdowns. Dowling was less flashy, but had 18 catches and seemed on his way to a productive career at Virginia. Then, last season, Levrone said over-training was to blame for a fractured vertebrae in his lower back. He caught two passes in the season opener at UCLA, and then the injury got worse the season wore on. Eventually, he had surgery.Dowling tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a non-football activity over the winter, also requiring surgery. He appeared in eight games last season, but was not near full speed, and his one reception was for minus 1 yard. With new offensive coordinator Robert Anae planning to shuttle in receivers on a regular basis this season, trying to keep them fresh, the return of Levrone and Dowling could be a huge bonus for the Virginia quarterback.Levrone is a guy that, when the balls there, you know hes going to compete for it, and thoose are the kind of guys you want.dddddddddddd Donis the same way, so it will be a lot of fun getting back to throwing to them, incumbent Matt Johns, who is battling fellow senior Connor Brewer and transfer Kurt Benkert for the job, said during camp.Levrone has been battling a left leg injury in camp, but first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall doesnt expect it to affect his ability to play this season, when the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is eager to help the Cavaliers turn the corner. Virginia hasnt played in a bowl game since 2011, but the players expect that drought to end.Its part of the mindset Mendenhall and his staff have worked to instill since he replaced Mike London after last season.I feel like in the past, weve had a lot of false hype, Levrone said. Wed come out here and its a new season, new beginnings, but when you do the same methods, youre going to get the same results, so thats kind of just the false hype that weve had in the past. Now that weve changed, we have an honestly new program, new tradition, new methods -- everything is different. Everybodys bought in way more. You can see it. Its genuine.Dowling, too, is eager to make his mark during a new day for Virginia football. We will not have a year like we did last year, he said. We will be in a bowl game and I can just testify based on how hard weve worked.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org---Follow Hank on Twitter: www.twitter.com/hankkurzjr ' ' '
