The NCAA has issued two new interpretations to guide how officials should identify targeting fouls, one of which is meant to clarify the exact location of the crown -- the part of the helmet which must be used to incur such a targeting penalty. It seems that some officials have been interpreting the crown of the helmet to mean the tip-top portion of the helmet only, NCAA Football Secretary-Rules Editor Rogers Redding said in a release. We want everyone to understand that the crown of the helmet starts from the area above the facemask to the dome of the helmet. The NCAAs reiteration, which comes in the aftermath of Stanford wide receiver Francis Owusus concussion at UCLA last week, clashes with a Pac-12 statement supporting its officials decision not to penalize the Bruins Tahaan Goodman for his hit on the play. While there was certainly helmet-to-helmet contact, neither the game officials on the field or the replay officials called targeting because contact was with the front of the helmet and not the crown (top) of the helmet, the conference said in a release.Replays showed that Goodman appeared to hit Owusus helmet with the area above his facemask. According to the NCAAs release, that counts as the crown -- meaning that the hit should have been flagged for targeting.Stanford coach David Shaw advocated for rules changes as a result of the non-call this week, saying that a targeting penalty should blanket all helmet-to-helmet contact -- and not just that initiated by the crown of the helmet. To me, the letter of the law is immaterial, Shaw said. If you have contact on one helmet to another helmet, that should be a penalty. We should go back and reword our rulings, go back and reteach our officials and our replay officials. Were trying to take care of these young men. Plays like this should be penalized so that they stop happening. If we dont penalize them, they will continue to happen.... There is language [in the rulebook] that obviously needs to be amended, preferably sooner than later. And I think youll get relatively unanimous support for such language. The second interpretation released by the NCAA on Friday pertained to replay officials, who have the opportunity to stop the game to determine if an egregious targeting foul was missed by on-field officials. There have been some instances where this rule couldve been applied for targeting fouls, Redding said. We want to provide more guidance so that this rule is applied more consistently.Vapormax Outlet . Brett Lawrie hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the fifth before Navarro belted a drive to left field for his fifth homer.Anderson went 2 for 4 for his 12th multihit game since he was promoted from the minors on June 10. You have to make pitches all the time. While Sabathia is struggling, Shields (4-9) got his second straight win after a long slump that started with San Diego and carried over to Chicago after he was acquired in a trade a month ago. The right-hander, who went 0-2 with a 15.80 ERA in his first four starts for the White Sox, limited New York to five hits in six innings.Youre going to have rough stretches pretty much every year, so its nothing crazy, Shields said. But were just going to continue to work hard and try to get this team some wins. The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Shields retired Aaron Hicks on a fly to right to end the inning.ddddddddddddThey put the first two batters on in the eighth before Nate Jones struck out Didi Gregorius, Headley and Hicks -- all swinging.New York (40-42) went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position. That was the difference in the game, Girardi said. They got the hits when they needed them and we didnt. We had plenty of opportunities. The Yankees also were hurt by three errors by the normally sure-handed Gregorius at shortstop, including a flubbed grounder that helped the White Sox score two runs in the eighth.Todd Frazier went 3 for 3 with two walks as Chicago (43-40) moved three games over .500 for the first time since June 3.
